Due to some disability, I am compelled to perform my Salaat whilst
sitting on a chair.Usually, most of those reading their Salaat on chairs form their saff
from either end and not from the centre. Sometimes, especially for Fajar, the saff is not complete from the centre at the time of Takbire Oola. This leaves a gap between the two groups of Musallees. Others normally join while the Salaat is in progress and the saff is then joined and completed with those who had started their Salaat from the side.

Q1.Should I join those who formed the saff from the side or those who started from the centre ?

Q2. Since I desire the Sawaab of the first saff and also of being close to the Imaam, is it permissible or desirable for me to sit anywhere in the saff, knowing full well that the saff is going to be complete from the outset ? (I do concede that it is not a pleasant sight to have chairs intermingled with the other Musallees).

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Rasūlullāh Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam emphasized on completing the Sufūf (rows). Rasūlullāh Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam also warned against leaving gaps in the Sufūf. Consider the following Hadīth:

وَلَا تَذَرُوا فُرُجَاتٍ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَمَنْ وَصَلَ صَفًّا وَصَلَهُ اللَّهُ، وَمَنْ قَطَعَ صَفًّا قَطَعَهُ اللَّهُ (سنن ابى داود، بَابُ تَسْوِيَةِ الصُّفُوفِ)

Do not leave gaps for Shaitān. Whosoever completes the Saff, Allāh will shower him (with His Mercy). And whosever breaks the Saff, Allāh will deprive Him of His Mercy. (Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Chapter on straightening Sufūf)

It is clear from the above-mentioned Hadīth that the space in between the Sufūf (rows) must not be left incomplete. One should join the first Saff from the center, even though he may be performing Salāh on a chair.[1] If the back two legs of the chair are in line with the feet of other Musallīs (congregants), the chair will not protrude into the second Saff, thus not causing any inconvenience to others. This is analogous to a person performing Salāh whilst seated on the ground. Hence, it is permissible for you to perform Salāh anywhere in the Saff even though it may be close to the Imām.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
